The company, Aecoz, located in Bengaluru, is said to be changing for the better the food packaging business, by manufacturing paper-based biodegradable, and durable food packaging. Dhanvita Sathyanand, Srinidhi Rajaram, and Bharath Sathyanand started the company under the assertion that it has saved 400,000 kilograms of plastic from further use and achieved an admirable revenue of Rs 5.2 crore per annum. The founders previously had corporate careers, working in IT and management for major firms like Infosys, Tesco, and JP Morgan.

It was in the process of procurement that they realized several inefficiencies in the food and hospitality industries. They developed Agrainz, a platform that simplified procurement for restaurants so that they could compute expected yield and cut down on waste. The platform gained traction and began supplying 450 gourmet products, from cheese to other perishables. However, the COVID-19 pandemic decreased demand severely, resulting in the demise of Agrainz. In the year 2020, the three founders established Aecoz, a bootstrapped startup engaged in manufacturing biodegradable food packaging, with the idea of establishing a sustainable and impactful business.

Revolutionizing Food Packaging with Paper

Aecoz, the company importing biodegradable packaging alternatives, has gained entry into the market due to the plastic ban in 2019 in India. The company uses paper reels coated with a water-based barrier and human-consumable goods 98% biodegradable for up to 180 days. The packaging is certified food-grade and pollution-free packaging by CIPET. The process of Aecoz involves turning biodegradable packaging from paper reels into blanks and then molding bowls in high-temperature coils at 350°C. Their products include over 45 million cups, bowls, containers, lids, and boxes. Aecoz is now very vocal in promoting sustainable packaging and reducing microplastic pollution in the food industry. However, biodegradable packaging costs more compared to plastics, and it targets consumers buying at a price premium of 35% over the price of plastics. Aecoz's first major client was MTR, who took a long time to approve their product, thanks to their experience with rasam and sambar held at 90°C. Customization is one of the major strategies for attracting clients.

Expanding Reach and Future Plans

Aecoz is a biodegradable packaging manufacturer with a large customer base in India, catering to major retailers such as Lulu Hypermarkets, MTR, Milano Ice Creams, Magnolia Bakery, and Ritz-Carlton. More recently, they have entered the UK market, where acceptance for sustainable packaging is greater. Aecoz has also reduced its product costs from 60% down to 30% to get small restaurants interested in trying their products. They feel it is important to enforce the plastic bans more rigorously to minimize plastic pollution in heavily populated urban centers like Bengaluru. The protective health effects of sustainable packaging are being underlined by Aecoz as they implore that people consider the long-term health effects of their choices. The founders feel passionate about stating that sustainability is not just another goal for the business but is all about responsibility, and every small step will take us toward a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
