Miguel Fernandez Alcalde Appointed President of EMD Serono, Strengthening U.S. Healthcare Leadership

EMD Serono has named Miguel Fernández Alcalde the new President for Merck KGaA's U.S. and Canada healthcare businesses. Alcalde was Chief Operating Officer for more than a year and carries with him considerable expertise in global business excellence and innovation in the position. His further exposure as General Manager for Merck KGaA in Finland and Spain lends itself to his capacity to lead in the competitive U.S. market. Fernández Alcalde is honored to continue in the line of EMD Serono striving to improve the lives of patients with unmet medical needs. For this position, he takes over from Chris Round, whose leadership has brought the company tremendous growth and innovation. EMD Serono has some 1,050 employees and is very much established in Massachusetts as a strong presence in the United States. Mr. Fernández Alcalde brings to the new portfolio the experience of former Chief Operating Officer at EMD Serono- Head of Global Business Excellence & Innovation, and General Manager in Finland and Spain before taking the mantle of new CEO. He has a degree in Pharmacy from University Complutense, Madrid, completed his MBA at the University of Alcalá de Henares, and earned a Master's Degree in Management from IESE Business School.

Chris Round guided EMD Serono through multiple therapeutic launches and towards a solid financial performance and profitable growth.
