Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., introduced a new subsidiary, Yamaha Agriculture, Inc., with the intent to develop automation and Artificial Intelligence powered digital solutions targeted toward the specialty crop market. The company was founded to help growers become sustainable, profitable, and resilient against the challenges of labor shortages, climate change, and resource scarcity. Another initiative of the company will see their autonomous robots combined with the massive data analytics already available to them to bring precision farming into a new age across North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The creation of Yamaha Agriculture is an important milestone in Yamaha Long-Term Vision 2030: ART for Human Possibilities, with the three key pillars being Advanced Robotics, Rethinking Solutions, and Transforming Mobility.
Yamaha Agriculture's entry into precision agriculture is critically timed, as specialty crop growers are increasingly facing higher labor costs, intermittent availability of resources, and ever-increasing pressure for productivity enhancement. The acquisition of Robotics Plus and The Yield brings together two sets of complementary technologies for a rounded platform for smart farming. Robotics Plus specializes in hybrid vehicles that can operate autonomously in the field, thereby minimizing human labor. The Yield predictions and insights often use data analytics and AI-based models in forecasting yields, optimizing farm operations, and ensuring appropriate risk management for the grower. Yamaha Agriculture fuses robotic automation with real-time analytics to lower the grower's input cost while increasing productivity and enhancing the sustainability of its operations. A further extension of their goal is making certain that specialty crop growers reap the fruits of innovative solutions to achieve increased efficiency and sustainability.
The findings of a study carried out by the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission reveal that of the surveyed growers, 76% believe that automation can improve operations such as harvesting, sorting, spraying, and fertilizing. Autonomous spraying and fertilizing indeed seemed essential for 52%. AI-supported forecasting is still regarded as valuable for crop load management and yield prediction. Manual labor is crucial for specialty crop farms, which accounts for 38% of all cash expenses. According to the 2022 Western Growers Specialty Crop Automation Report, specialty crop growers spent approximately $500,000 annually on automation as a means to deal with labor shortages. Yamaha Agriculture is poised to assist growers in making the transition into a technologically-based approach to agriculture.
