ICT and R and D Projects for AI boost digital transformation

The Institute for Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) selected 610 institutions, including contract research labs, to initiate a project worth 164.3 billion. The amount is a (won) part of 1.32 trillion of the total Budget of the country for ICT and R&D developmental projects. The government is contributing to improving and enhancing digitalization in the Korean ICT sector.

The IIPT’s efforts consist of Research and Development for human-centric exploratory Artificial Intelligence services, following which ten projects have been considered for preliminary research on R&D methodologies under artificial general intelligence in specific key strategic areas. After winning the offering amount for the current year, the government utilizes this amount to inspect and perform an evaluation process to proceed to contribute to follow-up research. Apart from this government will also provide financial support of 7.95 billion for developmental progress in AI safety technologies for moderating and discarding existential risks faced by advanced AI systems with diversity, high-performance, and autonomy. To improve AI infrastructure and execution government is planning to spend 36.62 billion for proclaiming competent value in cloud computing technology through AI semiconductors by operating and building data centers owned by developed domestic accelerators. Further, the government allocated 6 billion for quantum computing to help adapt components and optical materials for quantum communication and to accelerate the developmental growth of quantum precision measurement methodologies. 

With a total support of 7.6 billion from the government, in development of the technological sector is proactively contributing to reducing cybersecurity threats and preventing data leakage from on-device through threat detection and responsive technologies for maritime cyberattacks. To introduce a transitional shift in the ICT market’s content industries and broadcasting government will initiate 3 billion to improve technologies for ‘programable media’ to reconstruct and modify broadcast media and allow proactive visualization of automatic creation and scripts of digital humans. The investment of the government in several areas of the ICT market in digital projects. 

Views and Statements

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute for Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) declared the selection of institutes to carry out 140 R&D projects as part of its first-round selection regarding Korea’s national ICT R&D invention this year. The invention aims to focus on goals to empower artificial intelligence AI in the ICT sector. Through innovation and encouraging digital infrastructure in the ICT market will secure a place in the market. Further, approaching the digital transition, IITP said that they have planned projects for cybersecurity, such as open-ended digital transformation and programmable media projects.

Additionally, the Ministry said, we are achieving the goal to take a lead in world’s top three AI powers with innovative technology from institutes academia, industries and research communities. IITP assures to proactively participate by supporting industries achieving outcomes and develop an ecosystem for excellent commercialization in technologies.
