Egypt and South Korea have partnered to enhance cooperation in the fields of health and medicine. On February 11, 2025, Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population met South Korea's Ambassador to Egypt Kim Yonghyon. Strengthening bilateral cooperation in healthcare, human resource development, and Korean biomedical investments in Egypt were discussed. Among the main outcomes are a grant project of $9 million for strengthening emergency medical services in Upper Egypt and a $10 million joint venture for the production of poultry vaccines.
South Korea has set up a grant project of $ 9 mn for upgrading emergency medical services in Upper Egypt, including Nag Hammadi and Luxor. The emergency response system development project will strive to improve that system, especially concerning rail-related accidents and general medical emergencies.
Starting next year, a project to provide mobile clinics, construct emergency rooms, supply the latest medical equipment, and conduct specialized training programs for emergency personnel will be initiated. It aims to reduce deaths and increase effectiveness in medical response to crises. It is a grant as part of a bigger approach by South Korea to support Egypt's health development and emergency response system.
The Dr. LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program in Egypt is one fine program that trains healthcare professionals in the areas of infectious disease response and health policy leadership. Established in 2007, this covers around 1,500 medical professionals from different countries of around 30. In this regard, Ambassador Kim revealed that this program is important in terms of exchange of medical knowledge between Egypt and South Korea and strengthening capacity in the healthcare system of Egypt in preparedness for future health crises.
Korea helped together with the $10 million investment between ChoonAng Vaccine Lab (CAVAC) of Korea and Global Pharmaceutical Industries (GPI) of Egypt to create a poultry vaccine production facility in Al-Sadat City. Creating the local production of poultry vaccines, enhancement of prevention of animal diseases, cooperation for economic development and job creation in the pharmaceutical and veterinary area, and synergy for future research between the Egyptian and South Korean medical industries are some of the expected benefits of the facility. Both parties have expressed their confidence in the ability of this venture to change Egypt's landscape in biotechnology and making vaccines. It should establish Egypt as a regional hub in veterinary pharmaceuticals.
South Korea and Egypt have reached an agreement for collaboration in the medical field that involves scholarship programs for Egyptian medical personnel to study in South Korea and joint research projects in the fields of biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences; technology transfer agreements to inject advanced medical technologies from South Korea to Egypt; and further developments in healthcare infrastructure. Both officials reiterated their commitment to extending cooperation with mutual benefits coming from the two countries sharing relevant expertise and resources within the healthcare sector.
The collaboration will include improvements to emergency medical services in Upper Egypt, foster professional development through the Dr. LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program, and provide support for vaccine production, thus enabling much stronger relations in sectors of healthcare between the two countries. These cooperations will strengthen healthcare systems, deepen diplomatic and economic relations, and bear testimony to the growing partnership between Egypt and South Korea.
