Renesas Electronics Corporation has expanded its RZ/V Series of microprocessors (MPUs) by announcing the RZ/V2N. Integrating Renesas' proprietary DRP-AI3 accelerator, this high-volume vision Artificial Intelligence  MPU serves to provide extensive power-efficient AI inference capabilities for end products ranging from intelligent automation systems to commercial facilities and smart cities. Compactness is expected to redefine AI applications in the areas mentioned above. The P2N was able to pack a 15 TOPS AI Inference capability into itself and was able to efficiently provide 10 TOPS/W for power efficiency. Advanced pruning technology guarantees optimum processing speeds at a lower cost and lower system power consumption.

Renesas Expands AI MPU

Compact and Cost-Effective Design

In comparison to its upper segment the RZ/V2H, the Renesas RZ/V2N is a 38% smaller MPU. Such a miniature size is the mark of vision AI computing embedded in smaller surfaces lest heat is generated. It is tailored for AI applications such as traffic monitoring, infrared and optical driver monitoring systems, industrial cameras, and automatic number plate recognition. Renesas will demonstrate the capabilities of RZ/V2N at Embedded World 2025, Nuremberg, in Germany. One of its features is that it is a dual-camera capable microcontroller, which means images can be captured simultaneously from two different perspectives. This improves spatial recognition and motion analysis, increasing accuracy in human movement tracking, AI-based car counting, license plate recognition, and object classification. March 11-13, visitors can witness the advanced features at the Renesas booth.

Industry Experts Weigh In The increasing demand for AI solutions in the midrange category has prompted Renesas to earmark its RZ/V2N microprocessor (MPU) for endpoints of

vision AI that do not boast power-hungry structures. Accordingly, such customers will be able to select a microprocessor most suited to their systems and budgets. According to Paul Williamson, Senior Vice President, IoT Line of Business, Arm, this microprocessor is "the most efficient with which Arm can leverage the compute platform for vision AI applications in smart cities, enterprise, and industrial automation." Renesas's offer also covers an entire development ecosystem around RZ/V2N, including an evaluation board kit, AI SDK and applications repository, system-on-modules and single boards from partner companies, and camera modules and peripheral solutions for fast integration. This will allow developers to quickly evaluate and deploy an AI application without the deep expertise usually required, thus saving market time and reducing complexity in designing the system.

AI Dash Camera Solution: A Winning Combination

Renesas invented AI Dash Camera Solutions, a reference design equipped with RZ/V2N, power management/application-specific ICs, and real-time clock ICs. This solution will find applications in industrial environments, public areas, and commercial facilities, enabling developers to expedite AI camera deployment. Renesas' Winning Combinations program further assures compatibility across Renesas' portfolio and the fastest time to market. The RZ/V2N is a new MPU with high performance, low power consumption, and a small form factor, perfect for AI applications. This is going to change the whole game in Vision AI evolution.
